What is a tintype?

Each photograph is hand crafted, unique, and archival. Each tintype or is created in the studio, and all images are original and are one of a kind. There is no negative therefore, no other copy exists.

Made using the wet plate collodion process, one of the earliest photographic techniques, (invented in 1851). A tintype is a direct positive photograph created by hand on a thin piece of black metal, using silver for the highlights/ midtones of the images.  Wet plate collodion is the perfect way to immortalise portraits, creating tangible heirlooms that can last generations. Plates made in the 1800s still look beautiful today.

The process involves pouring chemicals onto a plate, immersing it in a silver nitrate bath, and then exposing it to light in a large format camera to capture the image. Watching the photo appear on the plate is truly magical. The process is loved for its artefacts, sharpness, and beautiful metallic reflection, as the image is made of pure silver. One unique part of the process, the plate must stay wet while being exposed, so you get to experience the entire creation of your portrait.
